Bringing Starlink to the Florida Panhandle

The Florida Panhandle has historically faced significant connectivity challenges. Due to its geographic layout—marked by dispersed rural communities, dense forests, and coastline—combined with limited telecom investment, regions such as Baker, Laurel Hill, and parts of Holmes, Washington, and Liberty Counties have struggled with substandard broadband availability. According to BroadbandNow, as of 2023, less than 60% of rural households in some Panhandle counties have access to wired broadband that meets the FCC’s minimum speed definition of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. (BroadbandNow, 2023)

Current Internet Alternatives

• DSL (CenturyLink): Common but slow—often below 25 Mbps, especially in rural zones. (FCC Broadband Report, 2023)
• Cable (Mediacom): Available in semi-urban areas; limited in remote counties. (BroadbandNow, 2023)
• Fixed Wireless: Up to 50 Mbps, but performance drops with trees or hills. (Connect Florida, 2022)
• Satellite (HughesNet, Viasat): High coverage but suffers from latency (500–700 ms), data caps, and throttling. (BroadbandNow; Provider TOS)
• Cellular LTE/5G (T-Mobile, Verizon): Fast in spots, but rural coverage is patchy and tower-dependent. (OpenSignal, 2023)

Starlink Installation Baker, FL

Starlink Installation Assessment and Planning

Our Starlink installation SMEs received a service request from a resident in Baker, FL. We conducted the initial offsite assessment to gather information about the property using satellite imagery, request additional onsite photos, identify the roof type, and possible obstructions that could impact the installation and Starlink connectivity.

This preliminary step allowed us to assess the required materials, equipment and personnel needed to complete the Starlink installation efficiently. We assist our customers with selecting the appropriate Starlink model based on the connectivity requirements, recommend the mounting solution and supply other materials needed for the installation. A detailed job order is then prepared, and the installation is scheduled with our Starlink installers in Baker, FL.

Onsite Starlink Installation in Baker, FL

Scope of Work:

• Installation of a Starlink Standard dish using a pole mount, which will include trenching for cable routing.
• Digging a trench to bury the Starlink 45m cable from the dish to the indoor Gen3 router.
• Setting up and configuring the Gen3 WiFi mesh router.
• Guide the user on how to use the Starlink App.
• Test and document the installations with photos.

The Starlink installation team initiates the installation process by taking inventory of the Starlink equipment and ensuring that all equipment is complete and in good condition.

Then, we identify the most optimal location for Starlink dish placement by performing the Starlink obstructions test using the Starlink App, ensuring a clear line-of-sight to the sky for maximum signal reliability.

The Starlink dish was securely installed using a pipe adapter mount, which was firmly affixed to a galvanized steel pole. This setup provided a stable and durable foundation, ensuring proper dish alignment for optimal satellite connectivity

For cable routing, the 10ft 1/2″ PVC conduit sticks were used as protective sleeves for Starlink cable for underground and wall-mounted runs. Guides the cable safely into the house building via a junction box. The Starlink cable was then connected to the Gen3 WiFi mesh router. Powered on and then activated. Using the Starlink App, we customized the Starlink System settings with the customer’s preferred network name (SSID) and password. Guide the customer on how to use the Starlink App.

Starlink Optimization and Performance Testing

After the installation, our team performed a Starlink alignment test to ensure the dish was in the best possible position for continuous satellite connectivity. The process included carefully assessing the dish’s position, considering the elevation angle, azimuth direction, and potential obstructions (e.g., trees, buildings, or other structures).

Then, the Starlink speed tests were conducted to test the internet performance. It should be noted that Starlink may take up to 12 hours to fully synchronize with the satellite network.

This speed test result from a Starlink connection shows impressive performance, particularly for a satellite internet service:

Internet Provider Comparison

Here’s a comparison of your Starlink speed test result with other common internet providers in the Florida Panhandle, especially in rural or semi-rural areas:

Provider	Download / Upload Speed	Latency	Coverage / Reliability	Notes
Starlink (based on case study, Baker FL Starlink Installation)	294 Mbps / 25 Mbps	25 ms	✅ Strong rural availability	Fastest rural option, low latency, reliable in remote zones
DSL (CenturyLink)	Often < 25 Mbps	50–100 ms	✅ Common, especially in older infrastructure	❌ Slow; often struggles with streaming or video calls
Cable (Mediacom)	100–200 Mbps (urban/suburban)	20–40 ms	⚠️ Limited in rural/remote areas	Fast when available; inconsistent rural presence
Fixed Wireless	Up to 50 Mbps	30–100 ms	⚠️ Line-of-sight issues in hilly or wooded areas	❌ Speed drops with obstructions
Satellite (HughesNet, Viasat)	15–100 Mbps (throttled often)	500–700 ms	✅ Very wide coverage	❌ High latency, data caps, and frequent speed throttling
Cellular LTE / 5G	50–300 Mbps (varies by area)	30–100 ms	⚠️ Tower-dependent; rural areas vary	Fast in town, spotty in remote zones

Conclusion:
The connectivity performance result of Starlink installation in Baker, FL outperforms DSL, Fixed Wireless, Satellite, and even some Cellular connections—both in speed and latency. While cable is fast when available, it’s not consistently present in remote counties.
